Day 8. Phat Flakes

Thankfully we had another day on Mt Hutt with our ski/boarding bunnies. However, the conditions were far from the sunny and warm weather that we had yesterday; today was cold and damp thanks to some epic snow fall. Once we stepped off the bus we were greeted by sleet, but this soon transitioned into beautiful, fat snowflakes that drifted in the breeze. As glorious as they were to watch and catch, they made for chilly lift rides and caused a few of us to visit the retail store to purchase neck warmers and face masks after our lessons.

During today's lessons beginners worked on perfecting their turns and controlling their speed in anticipation of moving onto Broadway, a blue run, tomorrow. Some of the more advanced skiers worked on some tricks, as the visibility prevented them from exploring the black runs. Perhaps the most impressive of these tricks saw them skiing through each other's legs. Roan and Olivia's first attempt ended in a head butt and stack. Jamie had the skills though and slid through the legs of the group's instructor and then stood up again, quite a feat. With so much snow falling, it was only a matter of time before rival lesson groups began snow ball fights against each other. With a few days left on the mountain it will be interesting to see who will be victorious in the end.
Whilst the students are improving, Miss Adams & Miss Battoraro still need some help.

After a big day on the slopes, it seemed almost cruel to hold a trivia night and make students use their brains, but this is exactly what we did. Teams were arranged, $5 Formal costumes were assembled and it was off to town we went. Some teams had clearly done their research on New Zealand before embarking on their journey and put themselves in a great position during the knowledge rounds. Others, we hope, have learnt something from the evening.
All dressed up!

Leading into the final Karaoke and talent rounds it was anyone's game.  Given that students only had one day's notice of the task "present a 'talent' item", the official judging panel weren't quite sure what to expect, but we were certainly pleasantly surprised. A special mention goes to the aptly named team International, made up of Qingyang, Hedy, Danette, Alydia, Emma and Olivia who acted out an abridged version of Cinderella in nine different languages! An impressive performance that helped to secure them second place. Team Snow Buddies (Bri,Ruby, Izzy, Hannah and Lauren) showed some talent, but also had a killer music round and took out first place. Well done, girls.

The boys ready to tackle the  general knowledge rounds.

The last component of the evening saw students issued with special awards. This Ski Tour tradition recognises some outstanding achievements such as Best Girl and Boy Snowboarder (Emylee and Nemo) and Best Girl and Boy Skier (Eliza and Roan). It also acknowledges some more amusing achievements like Best Stack which was awarded to Jess K for taking out Riley on the chairlift, and Longest and Widest Snow Plow which went to Zoe for her efforts on Broadway today.

Winners are grinners.

A late finish at trivia meant it was straight back to Ski Time for bed. Team work and perseverance were needed to assist "Peg Leg Bri" back with Lauren and staff each taking it in turns to piggy back her home from town. We are hoping she doesn't get used to this kind of transport!
